KODA EDUCATION
KODA staff are available to speak in a variety of settings, and embrace the
opportunity to do so. KODA staff can modify presentations to fit any timeframe
and audience. KODA will educate on the importance of the Donor
Registry, dispel myths and misconceptions, and answer general and
medical questions about donation and transplantation.
Should you like to schedule a presentation on organ and tissue donation and
transplantation, please call KODA at 1.800.525.3456 and ask to speak to someone
in the Education Department.
Below are some of the programs that are offered
GROUP PRESENTATIONS
KODA staff are available to speak to community, civic, and professional groups and
clubs. We can provide public awareness information to groups at Kiwanis, Rotary,
Lions’ and other civic organizations, as well as provide a more clinical presentation
at healthcare or hospital related meetings. Recipients or donor family members often
accompany KODA staff, and share personally what donation or
transplantation has meant to them.
HEALTH AND COMMUNITY FAIRS
KODA will be happy to supply informational brochures and Donor Registry forms
for health and community fairs. Often, we are also able to staff a display
table with a trained Volunteers.
HIGH SCHOOLS
KODA has an established curriculum for high schools, which includes providing a
speaker, a video, printed learning materials and often, a recipient. Teachers may
also access a national program entitled DECISION:DONATION
at www.organdonor.gov that encompasses
an organ donation curriculum for
high school students.
COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES
KODA conducts on-going donor awareness and “DONOR REGISTRY SIGN UP” days
with student groups across the Commonwealth. Student government associations,
sororities and fraternities, student newspapers, and others from private
and public universities engage in activities to create awareness about
organ and tissue donation.
MINORITY COMMUNITY
KODA has materials available that specifically address African American and
Hispanic communities in an effort to answer questions and help the many individuals
awaiting a life saving transplant, including materials in Spanish. August 1 each
year is designated as National Minority Awareness Day, and events are planned to
increase awareness about the need for donation and to dispel myths and
misconceptions about donation. Minority Donor Drives are done at churches in
conjunction with the National Bone Marrow Program.
HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS
KODA’s Hospital Development staff routinely provide in-services and orientations
at hospitals throughout the KODA service area, including most of Kentucky, southern
Indiana and western West Virginia. Hospital Development staff conduct rounds and
work collaboratively with hospitals routinely.
DONOR FAMILY MEMORIAL QUILT AND REGISTRY DAYS
Hospitals and organizations may call KODA and schedule a day that KODA can set
up an awareness table, provide individuals an opportunity to sign up on the
Kentucky Donor Registry, and view the Donor Family Memorial Quilt. The personal
squares on the Quilt represent a donor who has saved or enhanced the lives of others.
NATIONAL DONATE LIFE MONTH
April is designated as National Donate Life Month, so many activities promoting
donor awareness occurs throughout the nation. Contact KODA if you would like
to create awareness at your school, organization, hospital or other
significant venue during April.
NATIONAL DONOR SABBATH WEEKEND
The full second weekend in November has been designated as National Donor Sabbath
Weekend. Donor Sabbath Weekend is a time that churches and synagogues locally
and nationally take a moment to share information about the wonderful opportunity
each of has to save lives through donation.

DONATE LIFE AMBASSADORS
Ambassadors are trained volunteers who wish to spread the word about the need
for donation and awareness about the donor registry. Many are transplant recipients,
donor family members, living donors, and others who choose to be donation advocates.
They help throughout the service area sharing their personal stories.
KODA OUTREACH
KODA also sponsors and supports many events in the KODA service area, including
donor awareness 5K walks and runs, county fairs and festivals, campus awareness
campaigns, and plays about donation. KODA is a member of the Donate Life Kentucky
Coalition and partners on many events with the Circuit Court Clerks’ Trust for Life
and other professional organizations that also raise awareness, such as the kidney
foundations and the eye and blood banks.
